I was born and raised in Chicago, and received a BFA in painting and drawing from Northern Illinois University.
Interest in blacksmithing led me to attend a six week workshop at the Brotman Forge in Lebanon, New Hampshire.
Upon returning to Chicago, I spent time as an apprentice at Gruen Ironworks. Erwin Gruen was a master blacksmith who had passed through the demanding German apprenticeship system in the late 1940’s.
I was also fortunate to became friends with another established smith, Gebhard Flad, who retired in the late 70’s and whose coal-fired forge I still use today.
In 1980, I moved to New Hampshire to pursue blacksmithing as a profession, opening IronBearForge. Then in 2004, I moved to Boston, and set up my shop in Dorchester.
